For the past few weeks, I have forgotten about life and engrossed myself in Forbrydelsen (The Killing), a Danish crime series. Although it has been a while since I watched the final episode, I am still reeling from the immaculacy of the show. Forbrydelsen deserves a standing ovation for its brilliance.
There are three series with each one focusing on solving a crime. There is also a political element intertwined with the crime. I personally don’t like to watch anything political but the series was astonishing and managed to captivate my attention. Although I do not understand Danish, I watched with English subtitles and I was enthralled by every single facet of the show. Forbrydelsen is unlike any British or American television show, the acting and the portrayal of the storyline is beyond remarkable. It is an amalgamation of suspense and vigilance.
The actors demonstrate the complexity of human behaviour and portray the haunting authenticity of coping with loss. Even without understanding the language, I was able to feel empathetic towards the characters. The protagonist of each series is Sarah Lund, and my god, I almost love her as much as Lorelai Gilmore. Her acting is by far the most stunning acting I have ever seen on a television show. Her determination to solve each case and her intuitive characteristics are magnificently manifested on screen. She also wears knitted jumpers throughout the series which have become almost as iconic as her character.
The script is faultless and is accompanied by the trepidation of the soundtrack. The cast is incredibly humanising, their reactions add a whole new level of realism to television and I still remain astounded at the depiction of Sarah Lund. She is not a cliché inspector, in fact she is a multi-layered character whose life is falling part.
Each series is different in its own way and still filled to the brim with intrigue. Not only will the show heighten your expectation of future television series, it will allow you to experience the anxiety of wanting to solve a crime and the consequences of breaching morality to do so.
I don’t want to give anything away so I just want to urge you to watch it. If you are in the
the first two series are available on Netflix. There is now an American version
which judging from reviews is nowhere near as remarkable as Forbrydelsen. It is not often
that I recommend television series to people but believe me when I say that it
is one of the best things that you will ever watch. UK
