Who Would Like This Twenty-Dollar Bill?

This is another excerpt from Paulo Coelho’s ‘Like the Flowing River,’ a compilation of thoughts and reflections.

Cassan Said Amer tells the story of a lecturer who began a seminar by holding up a twenty-dollar bill and asking: ‘Who would like this twenty-dollar bill?

Several hands went up, but the lecturer said: ‘Before I give it to you, I have to do something.
He screwed it up into a ball and said: ‘Who still wants this bill?

The hands went up again.

And what if I do this to it?

He threw the crumpled bill at the wall, dropped it on the floor, insulted it, trampled on it, and once more showed them the bill – now all creased and dirty. He repeated the question, and the hands stayed up.

Never forget this scene,’ he said. ‘It doesn’t matter what I do to this money. It is still a twenty-dollar bill. So often in our lives, we are crumpled, trampled, ill-treated, insulted, and yet, despite all that, we are still worth the same.

  1. it's a simple but really true story. those who judge people by appearances are the really terrible people... :)

  2. Well,if You are knocking those who judge (rather than see the lesson in the experience You have w/ them) and judge them as being the 'terrible' people, and if Our judgements about Others are not so much about Our judgements of Others but the judgements We have of Ourselves (outside reflects the inside) then my question is 'how are You treating Yourself?'...You are Priceless and We are All One...what You witness in anyone else can only be witnessed by the same from within Yourself...ponder that and Bless. ~ Ameera Tussi (on FaceBook)

  4. I took it as judging oneself, no matter all the things you experience , drugs, alcohol, rape, theft, you deviate from Allah swt. Maybe you get demoralised everyday by a loved one everyday. Just remember you are never worth any less. It doesn't matter how anyone else sees you it's never too late, for you always have worth.
